As an immigrant in the United States there are many crimes that can lead to you being deported. The deal your public or private defender got you to resolve your case may be too good to be true.

 

There are many crimes that can lead to your expedited removal from the United States. Not to mention your being detained (put in jail while your case is being litigated) while your case progresses through the courts. There are many charges that are not eligible for bail.

 

It does not matter if you are here illegally or if you have a green card. The immigration court does not care.

 

The worst part is most criminal defense attorney's have no realistic idea if the crime your are charged with has immigration consequences. I have spoken with many people that have entered plea to charge that carried a small amount of work project only to find out that the charge was an aggravated felony. They usually find out when it is too late to do anything about it.

 

The typical reason is the attorney that represented them did not inform them that the plea would result in deportation. Does this mean the attorney did not know or did not care? It does not matter, you will be on your way out of the country and the attorney that represented you will be back at his job the next day.
